‘We all know they are looking for a striker but they haven’t called us’: Real Sociedad president Jokin Aperribay insists Barcelona have NOT made an approach for Willian Jose as search for emergency attacking cover goes on
Barcelona have not made an approach for Real Sociedad’s Willian Jose despite being in desperate need of attacking cover, according to the Basque club.
Injuries to Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele have left Quique Setien’s side short of options ahead of a crucial period in the season.
But the La Liga champions are thought to be confident they can secure special dispensation from authorities to recruit an extra striking option.
Barcelona have not made a move for Willian Jose, according to Real Sociedad’s president
If Barca can prove Dembele’s injury rules him out for the rest of the season then they will be allowed 15 days to sign a player who is either playing in Spain, or who is currently out of contract – but any signing would not be able to play in the Champions League.
The club have reportedly made 28-year-old Jose, who has eight goals in 23 La Liga appearances this season, their main target but Sociedad’s president Jokin Aperribay insisted there has been no contact.
‘We haven’t had any conversation with anyone,’ Aperribay told Radio MARCA.
The 28-year-old is believed to be the club’s primary target if they are allowed to make a move
‘I don’t know what will happen. I haven’t read about it, but it is true that the market has close. I can’t comment much.
‘Willian Jose is a player who has attracted interest from several teams in the winter [transfer window] and we all know that Barcelona are looking for a striker.
‘I don’t know if they’ll call us, but they haven’t done it yet. He is an important player for us and we would definitely miss him.
‘We have many games left and we need everyone.’
The Brazilian forward apologised to Sociedad fans after nearly leaving the club during the January transfer window.
