‘Why on earth has VAR not looked at that?’: PSG fans rage on social media after they were denied a crucial penalty in Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich as Kylian Mbappe was brought down in the box

PSG fans were left furious that Kylian Mbappe was not awarded a penalty that would’ve given them the chance to get back into the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

The Frenchman was brought down inside the box in the second half with PSG 1-0 down, but the referee was quick to wave it away, pointing at the ball.

On the replay, it was clear that Joshua Kimmich had actually come through the back of Mbappe, catching the back of the Frenchman’s foot before making contact with the ball.

The referee quickly pointed at the ball and waved the penalty away, but it should’ve been given

There wasn’t much of a protest from Mbappe or his PSG team-mates, but they should feel aggrieved that they did not get a penalty from the incident based on the subsequent replays.

The fact that it was waved away so quickly, and that there was no check by the VAR system will only serve to add to PSG’s frustrations.

Social media erupted with criticism for the referee and VAR, with one Twitter user saying the system has ‘no consistency at all.’

‘Bayern got lucky there as should have been a penalty,’ said another, also calling VAR into question, while someone else said ‘VAR is operated so badly it’s untrue.’

BT Sport’s pundits were also baffled that the penalty was not given after the match was over, with Rio Ferdinand saying: ‘If they give that you cannot argue.’

‘Look at the screen,’ said Owen Hargreaves. ‘The ref is so close to that, you see Kimmich catch Mbappe’s heel. It should have been a penalty.’

Former referee Peter Walton said: ‘It is an on-field decision, we can forensically analyse it. I did not think it was a penalty in real time, but on the replay I do.’

The Champions League final was an unexpectedly quiet affair, considering the two teams had scored 69 goals between them in the campaign up until the final.

It was a frustrating night for PSG, as they couldn’t find enough quality in the final third

Kingsley Coman broke the deadlock just before the hour mark, and although PSG did push for an equaliser, they couldn’t find enough quality in the final third before full time.

Other than the penalty incident, Mbappe was kept quiet, as was Neymar, who had a lot of expectation riding on his shoulders going into the game.

Goalscorer Coman went down in the box in the first half, although VAR was correct not to be interested on that occasion.

He brushed shoulder to shoulder with Thilo Kehrer before losing his footing.

Bayern Munich fans will argue that Robert Lewandowski should have also had a penalty given

Kingsley Coman’s goal was what separated PSG and Bayern Munich in the European final

Late on in the game, Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski had a penalty shout of his own denied, but that was forgotten as a few moments later the final whistle was blown.

Hargreaves admitted that a spot kick should have been given for this incident as well, and Walton added that it was ‘even more of a penalty than the previous one.’

VAR has been under fire on multiple occasions since its introduction, and this latest blunder will only add fuel to the flames.

Bayern Munich are champions of Europe for the sixth time, and the win completes the treble including the Bundesliga and the German Cup this season.
