‘It was Frank’s best performance’: Joe Cole hails Chelsea’s win over Ajax as their highlight so far under his former team-mate Lampard
Joe Cole crowned Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Ajax in Amsterdam as the ‘best performance’ of the Frank Lampard era.
Cole, who is a former team-mate of Lampard’s, was impressed with the organisation and appetite of the Blues as the nullified Ajax before striking late to take control of Group H in the Champions League.
‘It was a top class performance and certainly Frank’s best performance since he went over,’ BT Sport pundit Cole said.
Chelsea’s win at Ajax was Frank Lampard’s best performance, insisted ex-team-mate Joe Cole
Cole, now a pundit for BT Sport, heaped praise on Lampard for how he managed the game
‘From being in and around the club it just feels right, Players who may have felt pushed aside or unsure of their future, they are now producing big moments for the club and it is credit to Frank and his staff. It is really looking good at Chelsea.’
Victory at the Johan Cruyff ArenA, which arrived four minutes from time through Michy Batshuayi, made it six wins in a row for Chelsea in all competitions.
Since losing at home to Liverpool on September 22, Chelsea have beaten Grimsby Town, Brighton, Lille, Southampton, Newcastle and now Ajax.
Lampard was active on the touchline as he looked to coax the best performance from his side
It is Lampard’s best spell since he took the job in the summer, joining from Championship side Derby County, and for Cole, Lampard and his players are only going to get better from here.
‘As players you want to know what is expected and what your role is,’ he added.
‘It seems that every game they play they get better and better. For a team like Ajax, not many teams go there, control possession and keep the ball as well as [Chelsea] did.
‘They were excellent tonight.’
Victory places Chelsea top of Group H on head-to-head record over Ajax and the two sides will renew acquaintances on the next round of matches, this time at Stamford Bridge.
Odds of reaching the knockout stages have now been handed a major boost with a trip to Valencia and home game against Lille rounding off the group.
